My art, my way
My subjects are just that, they are from my photography or from my encounters in the field “en plein air”, my preference is not to use any tracing or the use of projectors. My drawings and paintings are from freehand so at times a little quirky! My love is of all animals, wild or domestic. However, nature lives in the wilderness or an environment created by man – the subject will attract me, no matter what it is. There is beauty everywhere, the trees, sun soaked fields of corn or wheat, the sunlight that dances on the water. When drawing or painting animals or creatures it all about their uniqueness – that captures their special personality, the look and it’s their space! That is why it must be a creature that I have met, know them and respect their presence and space. When I return to my studio to finish a piece, I can still feel their presence, the smell, the nervousness, the environment, the telling breeze, the dancing light, or a storm brewing, the heat or the coolness of the day, and the curiosity the creature has of its surroundings.
I am so close to my subject I am mindful of its feelings and can imagine its slight tremble as the outline emerges onto my canvas or scratchboard. The softness, and the form that is rising under my light strokes, drawing the very essence of the animal, its soul, energy, and beauty. I feel privileged to be part of their world.’…Jan Lowe
