Glass Balloons - Scratchboard & Watercolor
Picture
Victorians are so lucky to have the National Gallery - it stages some incredible  exhibitions and is one of my inspirational places.
On a cold mid winters day, this young family caught my attention just outside the Federation Square Galleries.  The colors and of the balloons - they reflected the light like glass - I think my piece will be titled "Glass Balloons"!   It added cheer and glamour to the grayness of the day!  This Project,  as a black & white looked great, but I needed colour!!  It is a challenge - but exciting - capturing the colors and spirit is so important, my next steps will pull it all together. Goes to show that simple things in life are great subjects!
Still a lot of work before this project is complete!  If you wish to see my development of a new work depicting this - go to New Work 2019.

4. introducing of colour - chose watercolor. Think that I will push the background back into a faded-suggestive shapes only, which will give it more interest and not take the eye away from the main subjects. The jacket and bag has been a lot of fun and giving an excellent effect with cross hatching.
Picture
3. stage three - using the craft blade - and hope to only use this for the whole scratching process.
Picture
2. Using craft knife slowly forming and correcting the shapes. Want to show the jacket as being a "tarten" pattern.

1. Sketch onto Ampersand Scratchboard - not sure if it will be in colour or B&W.

"Wolves play too!".
Scratch on Claybord with Daniel Smith Watercolor - (11x14 inch).  The subject comes from one of Nicholas Dyer's stunning photographs and with his permission I used his beautiful photo of this little pup.  The pics I had taken from the Melbourne open range zoo just didn't catch the beautiful look that this little fellow had - so guilty because he is playing instead of being on duty with his wild pack!  The African Wolf is one of my favorite of all animals. I had seen them in various Zoos in my travels, but seeing them in the wild running free was something to behold when I was fortunate enough to be working in S Africa,
At my forthcoming exhibition in June 2020, all proceeds from sales are to go to the Foundation for the African Wolf, they are endangered and need our help.  Details and information on the foundation can be found by visiting www.paintedwolf.org.  A beautiful book has been produced with the collaboration of Nicholas Dyer and Peter Blinston "Painted Wolves - A Wild Dog's Life" - it is magnificent and worth every penny and it supports such an essential cause.

One of my rules is to only to use my own photography; so I have stepped out of my comfort zone; and I do hope that Nick can see what I conveyed in this depiction of his beautiful photograph; I have changed it, however I believe I have kept the soul and playfulness within the painting.

5. African Wolf pup is nearing completion - all but slowly. Hope to finish next week.

Ventnor Estuary July 2019
Watercolour on Arches Med. WC 360.
This is unique environment, the colours change all the time, so does the shape of the estuary.  This is a winters view, however it was a hot day and the colours were like summer.  the water was clear and captured the colours of the sky as did the sand.
This is wonderful place to visit during the long hot days of summer as well as during winter- it is surrounded by the large sand-dunes that keep the winters cold winds at bay.  My family visited and were joyed by the peaceful atmosphere this offered, shelter from the winds and offered a stillness to reflect.

Port Nepean Vic. June 2019. JML
Watercolour on 360 Arches Medium Watercolour paper.
Port Nepean on a very stormy day - the seas were interesting and the sky was strong and demanding.  My family and I were visiting this remote place in Dec 2014 - and I fell in love with the ruggedness and isolation of the area - just stunning.  The 200 yr old wharf slowly rotting away - yet it is standing proud against the turbulent seas..  The distant hills of Mornington on the horizon.  Recent opportunity to do watercolour - so against my better judgement - used medium paper. and colours by Daniel Smith! (I will also do this on the Hot Pressed Paper - the result will be interesting).  Will post it shortly.

Alexandra - scenically beautiful.  JML May 2019
The second painting is of Alexandra - South Island of New Zealand.  Alexandra is a unique and stunning place, very scenically beautiful.  Sheer cliffs of jagged rocks  with little vegetation and glistening lakes, the stillness was spooky, however - it was breathtaking.
My family and I travelled through this region in May 2018 after catching up with relatives on Stewart Island.

Watercolour on my favourite paper 360 Hot Pressed Arches paper with the unique colours of Daniel Smith.!
