"African Painted Dog". What inspired me to draw/ paint this beautiful creature in Scratchboard and limited ink is that the simplicity of line drawing, which captured the soul of the dog, ensuring the magic of the animals is not lost.
The African Painted Dog is now critically endangered, are some of Africa's lesser known animals and certainly very misunderstood. They are only found in the South & East of Africa which is sad as once they roamed most of Africa.
This creature lives in the magnificent Open Range Zoo in Melbourne Australia - far from her real home, however, the pack lives as naturally as they can in this zoo. Scratchboard and limited ink 11 x 14 inch by Jan Lowe.

31.8.2020"Living with Hope", I chose this little Koala as my subject for a special initiative for the Koala. Its history was what it was rescued in 2009 during the devastating Victorian bush-fires that resulted in the loss of thousands of Koalas and many other species where lost to these fires including nearly 400 people. It was a horrendous time for all. I visited the Sanctuary some weeks later after the fires, and was introduced to this little fellow, who was in recovery from burns to its feet, even with those injuries, it was feisty, resilient and a fabulous subject. I nestled the Koala into a half-burnt gum tree, which was appropriate; it gave rise for its plight to survive the bush-fires. These little creatures are unique to the Australian bush-land, each state has different species, but they all share the same survival existence because of the annual bush-fires; they need our projection and better land management to survive. 31.08.2020
Afghan Carver, this unique artist was carving bracelets and earrings from an old spent shell. As the material was of copper and or brass - he was making beautiful and highly detailed pieces. Working in poor light, but this man was not hindered by his primitive surroundings. Scratchboard and limited ink. Wanted to leave lots of shadow and show very limited light. I put this painting aside, and picked it up in November '23, and completed it. Overall happy, it was a challenge, however happy I completed this. "The carver - Afghanistan Tribesman
